I suffer from colitis. Are there any alternative remedies you can suggest that will work alongside my prescription medication?

When taking medication prescribed by your doctor, it is essential that you inform him if you are planning to take any other therapeutic substances, as they could react adversely with prescription medication. Nutritionists generally believe that poor diet and food intolerances to common substances such as wheat and dairy can exacerbate colitis. Try substituting wheat for a four week period, with foods that are better tolerated – e.g. rice, potatoes, oats, gluten-free products (widely available today) together with dairy-free alternatives such as rice, almond or oat milk, for a four week period and see if this helps. Increase intake of green vegetables, sesame seeds, almonds and chick peas to keep calcium levels up and ensure that your diet contains plenty of vegetables rich in healing phytonutrients such as carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli etc. Essential fatty acids found in oily fish and cold-pressed seed oils such as the organic Udos Choice (enquiries 08450 60 60 70) also help soothe inflammation.
