Alcohol problems (Guardian, 12th January 2002)
Printer friendly pageI am concerned about my own drinking habits. I come from a family of fairly big drinkers, and 2 certified alcoholics. While the thought of giving up altogether fills me with dread, particularly the Godly AA route, I'd appreciate some tips on cutting down, or 'managing' the drinking. I am able to go for days without a a drop, but I constantly think I'd fancy a glass of wine, and feel I'm abstaining just because I feel I ought to, when all I want to do is open a bottle. Any suggestions?
Psychologically, having support from individuals who understand the difficulties you face is essential; apart from AA, you could try SOS, Secular Organisations for Sobriety help line 0700 078 1230 or speak to a counsellor at the national Drinkline 0800 917 8282. On a physical front, the Chinese herb Kudzu contains two isoflavones called daidzein and daidzin, which have been shown to suppress alcohol cravings and inhibit the desire for a drink, thus this could be a useful herb to help you 'manage' your drinking. An alcohol-free tincture of Kudzu is available (stockists 0800 252875); suggested daily dose is 15-30 drops in warm water consumed as tea, up to five times a day. Acupuncture has also been shown to reduce cravings, so consider a course of this. Contact the British Acupuncture Council 0207 224 0883.
