Dandruff (Guardian, 12th January 2002)
Printer friendly pageCan you recommend good natural potions for getting rid of dandruff - preferably something that won't smell bad or stain my pillows?
Dandruff can be triggered by food allergies (see advice above for reducing intake of the common culprits and substitute with suggested alternatives). Other possible causes relate to specific nutritional deficiencies including fatty acids, zinc or B complex and high levels of caffeine, saturated fats, alcohol, salt and sugar. Increase vegetable consumption to boost vitamin and mineral levels and oily fish, nuts and seeds to ensure that essential fats are present. Dandruff can be a sign of a fungal infection so wash hair with a product containing the anti-fungal essential oil tea tree (i.e. Thursday Plantation tea tree shampoo 01274 488511). Massage head using Aveda's herbal Scalp Remedy (enquiries 0207 410 1600), which contains zinc and can be left in the hair (won't stain your pillows too!)
