Cold Hands & Feet (Guardian, 5th January 2002)
Printer friendly pageI always have freezing cold hands and feet, even when the rest of me is warm. I go running 3 or 4 times a week and eat a very low fat diet. My mum says it's because I don't eat enough but I wondered if I was lacking something else in my diet. I do smoke but not very much.
Do include the 'essential' fats in your diet – i.e. omega 3 and 6 found in oily fish, nuts and seeds such as flax and sunflower, or have a tablespoon of Udo's Choice oil a day (enquiries 08450 60 60 70) that contains a balanced ratio of these beneficial fats. You could try the antioxidant herb Ginko Biloba that has been shown to increase blood circulation to the extremities due to its capillary-dilating effect. The recommended dosage of the standardised extract is 180milligrams daily divided into three 60mg doses (Solgar and Viridian organic 0800 252 875.) A minimum course of three months is advised, although some experts suggest six months because the effects of the herb are cumulative.
