Asthma (Guardian, 16th February 2002)

I had a bad chest infection and was treated with anti-biotics. I have since been diagnosed with mild asthma and prescribed Salbutamol, which I don't want to take.

There are many herbs and homoeopathic remedies that are very effective in the treatment of asthma. However, as you wish to ultimately stop your prescription medication, I suggest you see a registered naturopath for constitutional advice and to help liase with your doctor in the transitional period (contact the Council and Register of Naturopaths 08707 456984). Eat onions, garlic, scallions, chives and leeks that have traditionally been used to treat chest complaints and help keep the airways open and clear. Garlic also possesses compounds that help to destroy infection-causing bacteria and can help to boost your immune system. Thyme can also help ease respiratory complaints so include this in your cooking.
