Colds and Flu (Guardian, 9th March 2002)

I am a teacher who invariably succumbs to bad colds or flu at the end of term; my colleagues also suffer. How can we prevent this?

Viruses are very clever at lying low, waiting until defences are weak before they strike, i.e. end of term! The herb astragalus increases the production of antibodies so intensifying the body's ability to fight viruses and infections. Unlike echinacea, it can be used as a long-term supplement to support immunity; take 200 - 300 mg standardized extract three times per day (available Solgar 0800 252875). Inhale essential oils including cinnamon, tea tree and cloves (see Aveda oil above) that possess antibiotic and antiviral properties; others like eucalyptus and pine can help to clear congestion while frankincense can strengthen our defence system and rebuild energy levels when our immune system is weak.
