Amino Acids (Guardian, April 2002)
Printer friendly pageI'm attempting a detox by giving up wheat and milk products while also not eating any meats - will I still get all my essential amino acids?
Here are meat, wheat and dairy-free sources of the eight essential amino acids: L-Lysine - potatoes, soy products, lima beans, yeast; Methionine - garlic, onions, lentils, beans; Phenylalanine - almonds, avocados, bananas, lima beans, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds;
Tryptophan - barley, brown rice, soybean, peanuts; Leucine - wheatgerm, oats; Isoleucine - wheatgerm, nuts, seeds; Threonine: nuts, beans, seeds; Valine: found in most foods. Remember to combine beans and lentils with rice as this increases the usability of proteins. Quinoa and amaranth have the correct balance of amino acids and are excellent foods to eat on a detox programme.
