Alopecia (Guardian, June 2002)
Printer friendly pageI have a patch of hair that has completely fallen out. My GP says it's Alopecia.
Hair is connected to the kidneys according to TCM and hair loss can reflect weak kidney 'qi'. Consult a TCM practitioner for a course treatment (British Acupuncture Council 0207 224 0883). Foods that TCM recommends include organic kidneys, red meat, oily fish (all sources of zinc) kidney beans and edible seaweeds (contain full spectrum of amino acids and essential micro-nutrients). Silica and zinc are important minerals for the hair (wholegrains, lettuce, celery, asparagus, dandelion, spinach, leeks, artichokes, celery and alfalfa.) In folk medicine, drinking sage tea was thought to encourage the growth of thick and healthy hair and I certainly believe in the benefit of drinking nettle tea. Scalp massage improves the health of your hair too.
