Q. What alternative remedies do you recommend for asthma? I have heard that acupuncture can help. My husband appears to be allergic to England, as antibiotics and steroids permanently remove the problem overseas, but do nothing for him at home. Many thanks for your help.

A. There are many wonderful natural remedies that are highly effective to help with relieve asthma, but as your husband is on medication, I am cautious to suggest some of these because one must be extremely mindful of possible drug/herb interactions. However, as you ask me about the efficacy of acupuncture, I can tell you that this would be one my modes of choice as it’s safe to work alongside your conventional treatment, in fact, you might even find a GP in your local practice who uses this alongside his orthodox care. I have witnessed some remarkable results with asthma where the patient was wheezing on arrival and when the needles were removed at the end of treatment, they left with greatly improved breathing. Also what will be of particular interest to you as you specifically mention that your husband is worse in England, is that Chinese Medicine takes into account of external climatic factors such as wind, cold, heat and damp that are known to have an impact on our health. If the damp and cold weather is aggravating his condition, the acupuncturist may also use the warming therapy of moxibustion too, which is an effective treatment for bronchial asthma. Moxibustion is the process of burning the herb Mugwort over certain areas of the body including acupuncture points to increase internal warmth and energy both in the meridians and throughout the entire body.
