Q. I suffer from acne rosacea and have found conventional antibiotic treatment ineffective. After discussion with my GP, I have stopped taking my antibiotics. Could you suggest any herbs that might help instead?

A.As you have been on antibiotics for some time, you need to take a probiotic to help reinstate your natural “good” bacteria. Replete, by BioCare, is an excellent formula. It costs £45.95 for a seven-day course; take one sachet a day, before bed (call 0121 433 3727 for stockists).
In ayurvedic medicine, acne rosacea is thought to occur because of what they call an “excess” of heat in the blood. As this heat rises, it results in facial flushing, which is further aggravated by exposure to sun, stress, embarrassment, eating spicy foods and drinking alcohol or coffee. To reduce “internal” heat, drink lukewarm camomile or fresh mint tea, which have cooling properties.
Manjishta is an ayurvedic herb used to treat acne rosacea. Its antibacterial qualities help eradicate pustules and it reduces inflammation and redness by cooling the blood. Pukka Herbs has an organic formula called Neem & Sarsaparilla, which contains manjishta, as well as neem and turmeric, both renowned for their ability to reduce inflammation and redness. Take two capsules three times a day. It costs £13.95, plus £1.95 p&p, from www.pukkaherbs.com; or call 01275 461950.
