Q. My nine-year-old son has had asthma for five years. Under the guidance of a homeopath, who has prescribed remedies and suggested removing dietary allergens (including wheat and dairy), his condition has improved. He is off almost all medication, but has an inhaler on stand-by. Another mother has suggested that the Bowen technique could help further. Can you explain more about this?

A. The Bowen technique, developed by Thomas Bowen to treat his wife’s asthma, is a gentle, soft-tissue remedial therapy involving manipulation. Its defining aspect is that rest is required between sets of moves, to give the body time to make its adjustments.
Alastair Rattray, an experienced practitioner and teacher at the European College of Bowen Studies, has investigated the technique’s tremendous benefits in treating childhood asthma, documenting hundreds of cases. He is currently designing a course to train asthma nurses in Bowen moves.
