Q. I suffer from dry, chapped lips and always wear lip balm. But unless I soften it on a radiator, the stick is often so stiff, it can actually make my lips crack and bleed. Do you know of a soft, natural lip balm that is easier to apply and will help heal my lips?
Kate McKinley, Berkshire
A. Never forget nourishing from within, even for an external condition such as chapped lips. According to Chinese medicine, the lips reflect the health of your stomach and spleen, so properly chewing your food and eating a wholesome diet will help to moisten your lips. Eat oily fish, nuts and seeds, as the essential fatty acids aid cell regeneration.
I recommend you also try Trilogy Intensive Lip Treatment. It contains 70% pure rosehip oil (rich in nourishing omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids), combined with jojoba oil to soften and cocoa butter and shea butter to condition. Unlike some lip balms, it is free of petroleum, which is potentially drying. You simply squeeze it out of the tube onto the lips. Trilogy Intensive Lip Treatment costs £9.95 (plus £1.95 p&p, from Xynergy Health Products; 0845 658 5858).
