Q. I have been living with candida for years. I have tried acupuncture and herbs, which reduced the symptoms, but I experienced a nasty “die-off” effect that felt like a bad dose of flu. I am, grudgingly, quite strict with my diet, avoiding sugar, yeast and mushrooms. Can can you suggest anything else that is gentle but effective? I take acidophilus daily.

A.If you suffer from candida, it can mean your immune system is compromised or your body has been weakened by stress. The anti-candida diet is terribly austere and, for the average person, can be difficult to sustain in the long term. It involves eliminating foods such as sugar, chocolate, bread, yeast, fruit, mushrooms and cheese, as well as alcohol, and focusing on fish, organic lean meat and plenty of fresh alkaline vegetables (to keep the acid/alkaline balance correct), along with some whole grains and live natural yoghurt.

Candigest Plus (£15 for 30 capsules; www. gutdoctor.co.uk) is a unique formulation consisting of seven enzymes that kill candida without the normal “die-off” effect that you experienced. Four of the enzymes effectively starve the candida by digesting the carbohydrates on which it feeds; the others digest the organism’s cell wall, thus killing the candida without putting any strain on the liver. Finally, protease enzymes digest the protein nucleus of the candida organism, which helps remove it entirely from the body. Take as directed, but avoid if you suffer from inflammatory bowel disease or gastritis.
