Q. I have been receiving treatment for back pain and have tried various therapies, including physiotherapy and osteopathy. These have helped, but have not totally cleared up the problem. Can you suggest anything else?
Matthew Hayden, Reading
A.There are many complementary therapies that can help with back pain, including cranial work, acupuncture, McTimoney chiropractic, Bowen technique and reflexology. These explore the relationship between back pain and other areas of the body, For example, since I began suffering with back pain, after having a baby, the spinal reflex areas on my feet have been agony to work on. Prior to this, however, I could press the areas firmly, with no real response or pain. Call the Association of Reflexologists (0870 567 3320) to find a qualified practitioner.
Bowen technique is a gentle treatment that involves a therapist using thumbs and fingers to make rolling movements over muscles and tendons at precise points. The process releases energy, sending impulses to the brain that trigger the body’s healing systems. While it can help with a range of conditions, it is particularly appropriate for back pain. To find a practitioner in your area, contact the Bowen Technique Therapist Register (07986 008384, or www.bter.com or www.thebowentechnique.com).
