Q. My father has been having treatment for a tumour in his lungs that has spread from his kidney. Chemotherapy has not worked. Can you suggest anything that may help?

Stephanie Lake, Bath

A.I would suggest that your father consults Dr Stephen Gascoigne, a medical doctor and acupuncturist who works with cancer patients at the Turning Point Clinic, Bath Practice (01225 427835, www.turningpointclinic.co.uk). He embraces a complementary approach, so he focuses on treating the whole person rather than the disease alone.

Also close to you is the leading holistic cancer charity, the Penny Brohn Cancer Care Centre, formerly known as Bristol Cancer Help Centre (0845 123 2310, www.penny brohncancercare.org), which provides physical, emotional and spiritual support to help people deal with the day-to-day challenges that a cancer diagnosis brings. I would also recommend a wonderful book, Foods to Fight Cancer (Dorling Kindersley £14.99), written by the leading oncology researchers Professor Richard Beliveau and Dr Denis Gingras. It explains scientific research and facts in a simple, straightforward manner and highlights foods that possess the active cancer-fighting elements, notably the brassica family (cabbage, sprouts), garlic, onions, soya, berries, omega-3 fats, tomatoes, citrus fruits (zest in particular), green tea, turmeric and the resveratrol compound found in red wine. If you don’t drink red wine, but still wish to benefit from this powerful polyphenol, you can take it in supplement form. Resvital costs £21.15 for 90 caps, from www.oliveleaf.co.uk.
