Q. My 18-year-old daughter has chronic cystitis and takes antibiotics daily. Researching the condition on the internet, she came across a product called D-Mannose, which is supposed to keep E coli, the root cause of her symptoms, at bay. Have you heard of it?

A Collins, Kent

A.Cystitis can be caused by E coli bacteria attaching themselves to the healthy cells of the urinary tract. D-mannose is a simple sugar derived from the bark of the spruce tree. A small amount of D-mannose, normally present in urine, can act as a defence against bacteria. When taken as a supplement, the extra D-mannose passes through the urinary tract, reinforcing the body’s natural defences.

However, not all urinary-tract infections are caused by E coli, and, as your daughter’s cystitis is a chronic problem, I would see a qualified homeopath or naturopath, who will help to address the source of the problem. Contact the British Homeopathic Association on 0870 444 3950 or the General Council and Register of Naturopaths on 0870 745 6984.

As your daughter is on antibiotics, I would certainly recommend that she takes a daily probiotic, such as BioCare’s Bio-Acidophilus Forte, two hours after her antibiotic in the evening. Bio-Acidophilus Forte costs £24.95 for 30 caps and AOR’s D-Mannose £20 for 90 tablets from Revital; 0800 252875, www.revital.co.uk. Take as directed.
