Q. I am addicted to diet cola, which I drink to give me a lift and to stop me snacking or overeating. I am an otherwise healthy eater, but worry about the effect on my teeth. Can you suggest something to satisfy my cravings?

Sarah R, London

A.You are right to be concerned. Diet colas contain many chemicals and sugar substitutes, as well as caffeine and preservatives, such as sodium benzoate, that are not considered good for the body. Such drinks also contain phosphoric acid, which will erode teeth enamel and bones if intake is high. Klamath blue-green algae, harvested from the Upper Klamath Lake, in Oregon, is rich in essential nutrients, including amino acids, fatty acids and minerals. Vital Life pure organic Klamath blue-green algae (£12 for 60 capsules, from Simply Vital; 0870 609 1180) also contains phenylethylamine, a chemical that occurs naturally in the body. This helps to increase the quantity of dopamine in your brain; it should reduce cravings and give a natural “high”. Take four capsules daily.

You could also try Cinnachrome (£14.70, including p&p, for 60 capsules; www.healthproductsforlife.com). This contains chromium (polynicotinate), niacin (vitamin B3) and Cinnulin PF, an extract of cinnamon, which stabilise blood-sugar levels, reducing cravings. Take 1-3 capsules daily.
